Coping with Negativity

Five easy ways to deal with negativity

1) Don’t just keep it to yourself.

Tell someone else. People who become negative often fear intimacy more than others. We may think that we are lowly and in some way not worthy. However, this is a projection of low self-esteem and low self-worth. It is important to spend time with someone/people you can trust and share your thoughts and feelings. It is very important and healthy for your mental and physical well-being.

2) Work your feelings and moods.

Negativity is a self-destructive feeling. Accept that emotions are natural and helpful. Learn that mood changes don't come "out of the blue" — they are always started by an event, a memory or a dream. Just as the negativity arises, it will also subside. It will go away. It is natural to have emotions, just try not to hanker after them.

3) Challenge your thinking when you are feeling negative

Negative people always blame others for their events in their life, of course events that have not turned out as they wanted them to. These are all learned habits of thought that can be unlearned. This is all conditioning. Pay attention to your assumptions and beliefs. Are they rigid? Why not concentrate on that which is positive in your life. Why not celebrate? Why not focus on positives rather than honing in on inadequacies of others and yourself? Why not live in positivity, as opposed to negativity?

4) Take care of your self.

Pay attention to messages from your body. People who become negative regularly often do not eat correctly nor exercise: yet they have high expectations of themselves. Take time out for moderate exercise, eat healthily, and allow yourself some pleasures in life.

5) Try to be somewhat more detached.

We spend so much time and effort trying to control things. If we took a few steps back and analysed things in the cold light of day, we would realise that they aren't worth the struggle, worry and suffering anyway. Many things that we worry about are actually unimportant on the grand scale. However, because we have gotten so involved and embroiled in certain situations, we have made our own chains and tied ourselves up in them. We may find that we're trying to change things that we realistically cannot change. Instead of hitting your head against a brick wall, learn to accept that the world does not always dance to our tune. It has a tune of its own!
