Children Not So Hot at Conversing

Tue, 04 Apr 2006

Conversation is dying as families are not trying just chat to their children, so recent research emphasises. Many children start school hardly able to speak and really have a variety of grunts as communication.

Has toddler teaching deteriorated?

Too much tv, not congregating at family meals and forward faced pushchairs have all contributed to destroying conversation otherwise conducted by parents and children.

There are also great behavioural implications, especially for behaviour during the initial years at primary school, so says a report by the Basic Skills Agency.

Children who are unable to express themselves effectively resor to tantrums are disruptive.

The Basic Skills Agency atr emphasising the absolute necessity for parents to speak and listen to children at home .

It is also important for families to spend some of their time in one room, not all splintered in different rooms of the home. A survey done by the National Literary Trust, a charity, in 2005, took the form of an online poll upon hearing from health visitors that front-facing buggies contribute to speech problems in very young children.

800 parents as well as childminders responded. 89% agreed that they would talk to their child more if he/she child faced them in the buggy.
