Being Chunky Is Alright

Wed, 02 Aug 2006

Are you on the wrong side of plump? Well with all the anxiety about obesity with its health risks, you would think that chunky people are at serious risk of heart disease and diabetes. However, you may be healthier than slimmer people.

Acomplia, a weight loss pill, was launched last month. It can be used to treat anyone who has a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 that is how obesity is defined.

Most of think if we are chunky we need to be slimming. However, what if being overweight or obese is not necessarily unhealthy?

Most 'overweight' people are in fact less likely to die early compared to those of 'normal' weight. And losing weight and regaining it can be worse for you than staying the same weight.

The connection between weight and health has been up for discussion for many years.

A healthy lifestyle consisting of a balanced diet and exercise are more important that the amount someone weighs.

Only in obese cases is weight an issue, otherwise its lifestyle. As far as BMI has it, 50% plus of the UK population is overweight, with a further 20% obese.

Dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared derives BMI. 18 to 25 is normal and healthy, 25 plus to 30 is overweight, and 30 + is obese. Say if you are 5ft 8in, weigh 158lb; your BMI is normal at 24. Increase your weight to 171lb, you become overweight, go above 197lb and you are obese.

Diet pills could be considered by those obese, otherwise daily exercise and a healthy diet is the solution, as ever.
