Budapest has a very varied history, amazing architecture and a rich heritage. Hungary's capital deserves to be called the "Paris of Central Europe". With its Western luxury and cultural traditions, it has a mixed identity and makes for a great holiday destination.
The city sits on the Danube, with its grand avenues, parks and magnificent buildings. It has a 20 th century feel to it, when the majority of the city was built.
At the heart of this ancient city lies the Castle quarter, with historical monuments. In the last 800 years the city has experienced all kinds of disaster imaginable, world war, fire and earthquake. Yet the city's beauty has lasted through possible events.
A holiday in Budapest is like going back in time, with its Baroque houses covering Roman stones. Underneath Budapest there is labyrinth of caves where there was a military station for 20,000 German soldiers in WWII. A particularly poignant building in Budapest is the 700-year-old Matthias Church in Holy Trinity Square.
The old Royal Palace with its beatific buildings are the core of the Castle quarter.
When to Go
Budapest has 2,000 hours of sun a year. So this means that there are various opportunities to visit Budapest during the year in quite good weather, avoiding the costliness and craziness of Europe' high holiday season.
Spring and autumn make for glorious times to holiday in Budapest, with lots to do and see. In the winter most of the museums and tourist sights are shut after December 15 th . You can still get lovely blue skies in the winter. Summers are lazy and boiling hot, great for sipping a Dreher (the local beer) in a trendy outdoor café, as well as going along to one of the multiple festivals in town.
